When the current from the car's battery or alternator flows through the primary windings, an electromagnetic field is created around the core. When the current is interrupted, the electromagnetic field collapses and a high voltage is developed in the secondary winding. This voltage is passed to the spark plugs by a distributor, via its rotor.
