Volkswagen, a German automaker is known for manufacturing well-refined vehicles with good ownership experience. The roots of this manufacturer dates back to 1934 when Ferdinand Porsche designed a beetle-shaped sedan named Volkswagen when Adolf Hitler commissioned him to design a compact vehicle. He also built a town for the workers near the plant. During the second world war the factory was damaged and went under the control of British army. On taking control over the production plant, it was renamed as Volkswagen and the town which was built for its employees was named Wolfsburg. The mass production of the beetle-shaped sedan began during the end of 1940s and the model was introduced in US in 1949. The very next year the brand expanded its product lineup. The versatile Bus became popular and also the Beetle became the best selling car of all time. During 1950s the brand also introduced Karmann Ghia, a two-seater sports car which was based on Beetle's platform. With the help of effective marketing during 60s the company could touch 1 million in the sales of the Beetle. In 1972, the world record for producing 15 million units was set by the Beetle beating Model T of Ford. The new models introduced during 70s include Passat and Golf which were also known as Dasher and Rabbit in US. Passet was the first vehicle to use standardized components which can be used in another models. Following this Golf (Rabbit) was released and both were huge success. Two other new models, Scirocco sport coupe, Golf/Rabbit GTI performance vehicle was introduced during the 70s. In 1983 Volkswagen introduced robots in assembling the vehicle and during mid 80s the performance oriented Golf GTI helped Volkswagen win Group A World Rally Championship. After withdrawing Beetle from US market in 70s it was reintroduced as New Beetle in early 90s. In 2000 Volkswagen ventured into luxury segment with Phaeton sedan and Touareg SUV. But Phaeton was not successful in terms of sales. Finally Volkswagen concentrated on family sedan and spacious SUV.
