Peugeot is a French car brand and the second largest car
manufacturer in Europe. The roots of the brand trace back to the nineteenth century
when the Peugeot's family business manufactured windmills, household utensils and coffee grinders. Then in 1882 Armand Peugeot started automobile manufacturing first starting with bicycles. It was in 1889 the company ventured into
a three-wheeled steam-powered car. Later in 1890 the company introduced a four-wheeled car with
a Daimler gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine. Peugeot unveiled this four-wheeler with its own engine in the year 1896. From then on the company concentrated on manufacturing and exporting cars.
In 1913, half of the cars manufactured in France were Peugeot. The year 1929 saw the introduction of
the Peugeot 201 and during the period it was the most cost-efficient car in France. This model was the first to introduce
the independent front suspension feature. Following the success of the model, Peugeot introduced
the Peugeot 202, Peugeot 302 and Peugeot 402. After the second wold war the brand stabilized itself with
the Peugeot 203 in 1947 and the Peugeot 403 in 1955. The brand landed in the US market during 1958 and in 1960 the company introduced
the Peugeot 404. Peugeot suffered during the oil crisis and great depression but regained its position as France's leading car manufacturer. In 1978, Peugeot took over the European division of Chrysler and sold its vehicles under the brand name Talbot. The year 1983 brought one of the successful models of Peugeot,
the Peugeot 205. In the 1990s the reputation of Peugeot-Citroën was balanced but in 2006 Peugeot-Citroën closed its manufacturing plant.
