The fuel tank is an important part of the fuel system. It is said so because it stores the fuel until the fuel is used for vehicle operation. When the fuel is required by the vehicle, the stored fuel in the fuel tank is pushed into the engine through fuel pump. The fuel pump in the fuel system helps in pumping the fuel from the tank in high pressure to the fuel injector system of the engine.
There are two types of fuel pumps. It may be a mechanical pump or an electric pump. In earlier days, mechanical pump was used for vehicles. The mechanical fuel pump can be found in the camshaft of your vehicle's engine. Nowadays the diesel fuel pump has become an electrical component and also is available as a small size device which can be seen inside the fuel tank. The power required for the electric fuel pump is got from the car's battery. The main function of the fuel pump is to push the gasoline to the engine by creating a positive pressure.
