Ball Joint

Ball Joints are flexible spherical bearings in your vehicle's suspension that connects the control arm to the steering knuckle. The narrow end of the control arm pivots on the ball joint and makes the car more stable and easier to spin. The ball joint, which is made of steel, consists of a bearing stud and a socket contained in a casing. The stud is threaded and fits into a tapered slot in the steering knuckle. The automobile suspension has two ball joints: the upper and the lower ball joints, for each front wheel. The construction of the ball joint allows for movement in two planes simultaneously. Combining two ball joints with the motion of the control arm helps the driver to steer the vehicle.

The lower ball joints are usually more susceptible to wear and tear since they bear the entire weight of the front end. Sealed ball-joints do not need regular lubrication unlike the standard unsealed joints. However, they do have a grease fitting, called a grease zerk, that allows for periodic lubrication of the joint. However, standard joints tend to last longer than the sealed joints. This is because the seal in the sealed joint would eventually break and will need to be replaced, while the standard joint can be made to last longer by the addition of lubricant.
