What is an AC Expansion Valve?

An expansion valve regulates the flow of gas inside the a/c system. The responsibility of the A/C expansion valve is to control the flow of refrigerant according to the cooling demands. This process opens and closes to keep the evaporator core temperature from freezing. For example, when we increase the cooling level of the air conditioner the A/C expansion valve expands to release refrigerant through the system. It also works vice versa when you decrease the cooling level.

The A/C expansion valve includes three points of pressure to regulate the amount of refrigerant entering the evaporators. Those three points are the bulb, the evaporator and the spring. The evaporator and spring work together to close the valve when we reduce the cooling level. Likewise bulb pressure opens the valve. This happens when the pressure increases at the bulb.

There is no significant correlation between the evaporator and the expansion valve. The evaporator evaporates the liquid refrigerant and the gas just absorbs the heat. Hence this heat absorption causes a rise in temperature. In order to increase the temperature, the expansion valve will sense the temperature and release more refrigerant to cool the space. Again once the refrigerant cools the surrounding temperature, the evaporator valve will decrease the pressure and close the valve.
