Nissan is another Japanese manufacturer for its sleek and performance-oriented coupes, sedans, SUVs, minivans and trucks. The company was started as Jidosha Seico Co., Ltd in 1933 and the very next year the company merged with another Japanese automaker to form Nissan Motor Company, Ltd. The company launched its first vehicle under the brand name Datsun in 1934 and after the war Nissan
partnered with Austin Motor Corporation for manufacturing vehicles. With this venture, the company landed in
the American market in 1958. To concentrate on the luxury vehicle segment, the company merged with Prince Motor Company in the 60s.
The Datsun 510 sedan was the first luxury vehicle to be launched in the US and it was with the introduction of
the sporty Nissan 240Z
that the brand Datsun rose to fame and became a prominent player during the 1970s. This car was known for its cost efficiency, performance and style. By the end of the decade, the brand shad
sold 10 million cars. In the next decade, Nissan started selling vehicles under their own name leaving out Datsun, and the company
also launched its new division for performance-oriented vehicles named Nismo. In
the 1980s, Nissan also started its production in the US from its Tennessee plant. The brand was in its peak during
the 1990s as the models Nissan 300ZX, Nissan Maxima and
the Nissan Sentra were super hits and
were loved by most of the Americans. This trend did not continue and during the late 90s the company suffered
a drop in sales. Nissan then formed an alliance with Renault in 1999 to stabilize financially.
In the millennium the brand worked on remodeling the Sentra and Altima models which
were both well received. The brand also introduced new models called the Titan and Armada which were
both successful.
