The belt which turns around a rotor which has an electromagnet produces a magnetic field when the current passes through it. The current flowing through the electromagnet powers a friction plate attached to another end of the rotor. The friction plates thus provides power to the car's air conditioning system. The Volkswagen AC clutch enables the compressor to shut off even while the engine is running depending on the power needs. When current passes through a magnetic coil in the Volkswagen AC clutch, the clutch engages. When the current stops when you turn off your air conditioning system, the Volkswagen AC clutch disengages.
