The ignition system in your GMC Sierra involves an ignition coil, distributor, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires and spark plugs. The ignition distributor plays a vital part in the electrical system. The ignition distributor is responsible for directing current to the spark plugs. The ignition coil passes current to the distributor through a wire attached to the top of the distributor. The distributor rotates sending the current from the coil to each spark plug. The distributor is the heart of the ignition system because it “distributes” the ignition coil’s high voltage output to the individual spark plugs.

The cap and the rotor of the ignition distributor transfer voltage from the coil wire to the spark plug wires. The rotor is mounted on top of the distributor shaft. When the rotor spins it passes voltage to each spark plug wire. The coil is connected with the rotor which rotates inside the cap. The metal part of the rotor is connected to the high voltage cable from the coil. The rotor spins within the distributor and the electrical current jumps the gaps created in between the contacts and the rotor arm due to the high voltage created by the ignition coil. A worn out ignition distributor will affect the engine performance, fuel economy and emissions.
