The ignition system involves an ignition coil, distributor, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires and spark plugs. The ignition distributor plays a vital part in the electrical system. The ignition distributor is responsible for directing current to the spark plugs. It receives electrical current from the ignition coil and can also be used to control the timing advance. The distributor is used to control timing advance, receive electrical current from the ignition coil and to route or distribute the coil's high voltage output to the individual spark plugs.

The cap and the rotor of the ignition distributor transfer voltage from the coil wire to the spark plug wires. The rotor is mounted on top of the distributor shaft. It spins and passes voltage to each spark plug wire . The coil is connected with the rotor which rotates inside the cap. The metal part of the rotor is connected to the high voltage cable from the coil. The rotor spins within the distributor so that the electrical current can jump the gaps created in between the contacts and the rotor arm due to the high voltage created by the ignition coil. The worn out ignition distributor will affect the engine performance, fuel economy and emissions.
