The steering system is one of the most important contributing systems in the vehicle. In both types the construction is similar except for the difference in the steering rack.

When the rack-and-pinion is used in a power-steering system, part of the rack has a cylinder with a piston in the middle. There is a connection between the piston and the rack. The piston that is connected to the rack has one fluid port on each side of the piston. A higher-pressure hydraulic fluid is supplied at one side of the piston and this force of the fluid forces the piston to move. This movement provides the power assist to moves the rack.
