An electromechanical device which converts mechanical energy to electrical energy in the form of alternating current. Alternators are not only used in automobiles, it is also used in many areas like power stations to generate power. The prime responsibility of alternator is to produce alternating current. The functioning of the Cadillac Deville alternator is similar to the working of the DC generator. Alternator uses a magnetic field around the conductor, but the way of magnetizing the conductor varies as some uses rotating and other uses linear magnetic field. The electricity is produced in the conductor when the rotating magnet cuts the flow of filed around the conductor. Hence the produced alternating current causes the rotator to turn and this rotating magnetic field generates alternating current.

The purpose of Cadillac Deville alternator is to power up the electrical device in the car. The power generated from the alternator is stored in the battery, to supply electricity even when the car is idle. The biggest advantage of alternator is, you don’t really need to rely on the commutator. So the commutator is the rotary electric switch used in electric motors or electrical generators. Generating electricity using commutator is quite expensive, so it would be a breakthrough for alternators not depending on it.
