The power of steering relies on the hydraulic operation of the AMC steering pump. Most of the steering systems uses a hydraulic power to turn the vehicle's wheel. The hydraulic pressure is usually provided by the pump driven by the vehicle's engine. When a driver turns the steering wheel, small ports open up in the steering shaft a long narrow passage, which provides high-pressure that assists the shaft in turning the wheels. The hydraulic cylinder applies a force to the steering gear which in turn applies a torque to the steering axis. Steering can be either manual or power. The flow rate of the pump is directly proportional to the speed of the engine. At a high engine speeds the steering would operate faster than at low engine speeds. If the pump motor fails then there is no backup since heavy machines uses hydraulic only systems. Steering pumps are made to steer easily. It is an oval shaped pump moved by a pulley or belt.
